January Minutes 2024

 

Trustees of the Newton Public Library District met January 16, 2024 at 5:00 P.M.  Present was Pete Pasero, Emily Carroll, Ilene Woods, Jeanette Hickox, Amanda Lessley, Jennifer Hinterscher and Director Jacque Holsapple.

Vice President Pasero called the meeting to order.

Minutes of the November & December meetings were reviewed and will stand as presented.

The November & December financial report was reviewed.  bills were presented.  Trustee Woods made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Jeanette Hickox, motion passed.

Director’s Report

Circulation for November was 2,792.  Money collected from fines, faxes copier, book sales, cards, and miscellaneous was $349.05.  Ten new cards were issued.  The patron door count for the month of November was 1,373.

Circulation for December was 2,308. Money collected from fines, faxes, copier, book sales, cards, and miscellaneous was $241.00.  Eight new cards were issued.  the patron door count for the month of December was 1,043.  Director Holsapple provided year over year historical data of circulation sine July 2017 thru FY 2023.  circulation in FY 2017-2018 was 29,395 and has grown to 36,601 for FY 2022-2023, a 25% increase in circulation over the past 6 years.

Old Business

Christmas Story Time held on Saturday morning December 9 with Mrs. Claus was well attended.  Approximately 19-20 children enjoyed several stories read by Pat Gillespie aided by Mrs. Claus.

The library participated in Christmas on the Square from 2-4pm on December 9.  A few children took part in creating a Christmas Snowman.  It was discussed to move this event closer to parade time in the future.  

The library held another Stuffed Animal Sleepover on Thursday, December 28.  there was a pajama story hour for ages Pre-K thru 2nd grade and approximately 10-12 children took part in this event.  

New Business

Trustee Woods made a motion to purchase a $103,000.00 eleven month CD from Peoples State Bank with funds from the Special Reserve account, seconded by Trustee Carroll, motion passed.

The library was the recipient of the Ameren Love Your Library Grant and received $2,000.00.  trustee Hickox made a motion to purchase both children’s and junior young adult books with the proceeds, seconded by Trustee Woods, motion passed.

The board reviewed the Information Services and Fees Policy.  No changers were made.  A motion was made by Trustee Hickox and seconded by Trustee Woods, motion passed.

The board reviewed the Electronic Device Agreement for check out of Chromebook & Hotspots.  No changers were made.  A motion was made by Trustee Lessley to implement the agreement and seconded by Trustee Woods, motion passed.

the board discussed participation in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.  This item was tabled to allow more time to gather additional information about the program.

The library is participating in the 2nd Annual Patriotic Friendship Quilt Block Project.  Starting January 3, 2024 the library is accepting 6 1/2″ square blocks in patriotic red, white, and blue colors with a limit of 4 blocks per person.  Last day to accept blocks is July 4, 2024.  The donated blocks will be sewn into a lap size quilt and presented to a Veteran in Jasper County at the Veterans Day Program on November 11, 2024.  

The library is holding a mini used book sale from February 5-10, 2024 during operating hours.  Proceeds will go to purchase ne materials for the library.  

Due to the President’s Day holiday, a motion was made by Trustee Carroll to move the February 19, 2024 scheduled library board meeting to Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. and seconded by Ilene Woods, motion passed.
